Mistake #1 Assuming You Won't Qualify For Aid
Schools are looking for families with a middle class income, parents who can pay part of the tuition but maybe not all of it. Being "middle class" is relative to where you live. If you live in LA or New York a middle class income is between $150K and $200K a year! (Don't share this with your friend who lives in Texas. They will think you are insane.)

Good Parent Says: "Oops. How can I do it better?"
